Standards-Based Grading at Odyssey Middle School

Standards-Based Grading (SBG) evaluates students' learning strictly according to a set proficiency scale (standard outline), resulting in scores that reflect only the content presented, not effort, time, or behavior.

Seeds = Learning opportunities (LOs) are important building blocks towards standards; LOs are not included in final grades and will not be altered in the gradebook once due dates have passed.

Trees = Assessed events (AEs) are included in the final standard grades in Skyward.

Missing Assignment = You may get notifications from Skyward when a teacher posts a missing assignment.  Have a conversation with your student about this notification and double-check Skyward/Google Classroom to ensure they have everything turned in.

Decaying Average

Working on a 0-4 scale, students receive scores that contribute to a decayed average, with a focus on student growth. This placed 75% of the final grade on the most recently entered assessment for a standard. This means that even if a standard area is currently low, students can learn the standard, demonstrate this knowledge in future assessments, or propose a way to demonstrate this learning, and the next assessment can greatly impact their overall standard score. Placing the focus on learning the content and demonstrating this learning, not points gathering or revisiting past items that are no longer relevant or at the current learning level of the standard.

Yearlong Grades

Students can continue to demonstrate mastery throughout the school year in their core classes.

Semester Grades

Elective classes will be graded on a semester basis.

Grading Scales

For most courses at Odyssey Middle School students will see scores for individual standards related to the scale on the right using EE, ME, PR, BE, and NE. Courses bearing high school credit (Algebra 1 and Spanish 1 in 8th grade) will use the grading scale on the left converting the standards-based grade to a traditional letter grade.
