When Ellie, a fifth-grader at Woodburn Elementary School, approached Instructional Coach Brooke Hanson with the idea of starting a student-led reading tutoring club, Brooke knew it was something special. Inspired by the SMART Reading program, Ellie rallied a group of friends, and together with staff support, they launched a peer tutoring program for Kindergarten students who could benefit from extra reading time.
Now, 6-8 fifth-grade tutors give up their recess twice a week to
help younger students build confidence and literacy skills—an incredible example of leadership and kindness in action!
