Thanks to the proximity and enthusiasm of so many thriving, innovative businesses in the area, Camas School District has had the chance to partner with many of them for student internship opportunities. These hands-on, real-world experiences are invaluable tools for giving Camas students a true glimpse of their post-secondary options while equipping them with new skills and knowledge.
Currently, all students enrolled in the Camas High School Math Science Technology (MST) Magnet and several the CamTech program participate in an 80-hour (minimum) summer research internship. In 2016, more than 40 students took part.
Internship opportunities are being expanded to include students from the Integrated Arts & Academics (IAA) program as well as interested students throughout CHS.
WaferTech Distance Internship
At Hayes Freedom High School, through the WaferTech Distance Internship, students are enrolled for two terms, during which they spend 10–15 hours on site and received 20+ additional hours of mentoring from WaferTech engineers. Students learn math and advanced manufacturing industry fundamentals (such as statistical process control, 5s Lean Manufacturing, Cleanroom Technology, and Industrial Safety) through projects and direct instruction. The experience includes a tremendous amount of presentation technical writing. Students who completed the experience during the 2015–16 school year were invited to an advanced manufacturing hiring fair and offered positions throughout the region.
