JOY and HOPE are intimately connected and are powerful gifts we can give our students, perhaps the most powerful! One of the very best parts of being involved in public education is the JOY and HOPE students give us each and every day! The past few years we’ve featured stories that highlight the HOPE and JOY in our district. Let me know if you have any story suggestions. Thanks for helping us share the HOPE & JOY each week!

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year everyone! Thank you for all of your work in getting ready for our first day. Our theme of seeing & serving each student started with that preparation and continues in the relationships we develop and sustain with our students and families. Every connection we make is important!

I was listening to a podcast the other day from author/journalist Sebastian Junger. I was struck by the following comment:

“There are two things that we all have complete control over, that can’t be taken away from us, and that you’re not born with: courage and compassion” (Sebastian Junger, 37 min mark of the linked podcast). He goes on to tell a wonderful story of compassion that humbled him early in life. He carries that story with him in what he does today.

It’s a powerful reminder to me that I always have a choice. Whether it’s courage & compassion, hope & joy, or seeing & serving, I choose how much I give. We have an awesome power and responsibility in working with the students and families we serve. Thank you for being courageous and compassionate in seeing & serving each this year.

Happy first day!
