Course Outline and Performance Objectives
2007/2008
Instructor: Mr. Hickey Room: 906
Course Description:
Communications is an integrated class that combines Business English/Applied Communications (English 12), Entrepreneurship, Law, and American Government into a hands on class. It is designed for students that are entering the world of work, a 2-4 year technical college, a community college, or a university. The practical and relevant material presented in this class will provide students with a wealth of knowledge that will lead to their success after high school.
Classroom Rules:
All rules will fall in accordance with the 2008/2009 Camas High School student handbook.
Food and/or drink are not allowed in the classroom (a water bottle on the floor is the only exception).
Manners will be heavily evaluated. Say please and thank you. Respect yourself and each other. Raise your hand if you should wish to speak. Smile. J
Late Work – I DO NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK FOR FULL CREDIT. All assignments will be turned in on time, or you will receive less credit on that assignment (in accordance with the 2008/2009 Camas High School student handbook).
Academic Honesty:
· Any cheating will result in a zero for the assignment, test, etc.
· Cheating will also result in a conference period after school with the instructor.
· Copying another individual’s work will result in a zero for all of the people involved.
· Plagiarism of any kind will result in a zero on the assignment and negative points on the assignment until it is made up. www.turnitin.com
· In addition, you will fail the class for the semester unless you complete the assignment in the allotted time.
Grading Policy:
Final evaluation weighting will be as follows:
Factor Percentage
Daily Work / Class Assignments 25%
Team Work / Professionalism / Leadership 25%
Activities / Projects (includes Sr. Project 1st Semester) 25%
Tests / Quizzes 25%
Your final grade will be based on the following scale:
A = 93-100% B+ = 87-89% C+ = 77-79% D+ = 65-69%
A- = 90-92% B = 83-86% C = 73-76% D = 60-64%
B- = 80-82% C- = 70-72%
Anything below a 60% will constitute an F.
Materials Needed:
One ream of paper, 2 composition books, 3 ring binder, and college ruled paper. You will not receive credit for turning your syllabus until all are present.
Leadership:
As defined in classroom discussion.
Participation:
In business and in life, it is critical for each employee to arrive at work every day and on time, maintain good work habits, and maintain a good attitude. Consequently, points will be given based on your level of participation. The following are ways in which you can lose those points:
Arriving late to class will result in a 3-point deduction.
Leaving your work area in disarray (books not put away, computer not tended to, chair not pushed in, etc) will result in a 3-point deduction. Turn computer off at the end of the day.
Poor attitude or behavior will result in a 1 to 5 point deduction. If you are removed from class you will lose participation points for a month.
Sr. Project:
As you may have noticed, Sr. Project is included in your class project percentile for 1st semester. During second semester, Sr. Project becomes 30% of your grade for the class.
note: sr. project deadlines will not be changed, and points will not be given for work handed in late. sr. project assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the due date of the assignment (no exceptions). This means that the student must arrive to class with the assignment in hand in order to receive points (assignments may not be printed at the beginning of class). All sr. project deadlines must be completed in order to graduate.
Daily Work:
Daily work will be graded out of points possible per assignment. You must be present and on task in order to earn the points; therefore, attendance is critical.
Projects/Presentations:
Projects assigned will normally be worth 50-100 points each. These include (but are not limited to) a Career Portfolio, Business Plan, Multicultural Philosophy, Sales and The Economy Project, and Credit/Collections Project.
Tests:
All tests will be based upon the classroom curriculum and will occur upon the completion of each unit. Quiz scores will also be included in the test category.
