Curriculum
In fifth grade, we cover a vast array of subjects and topics.  Students have the opportunity to attend specialist classes (music, library and PE) with specialized teachers.  Everything else is covered in the classrooms.

Math
We are excited to be teaching the newly adopted math curriculum called Math Connects.

Reading
Camas has had great success with our Scott-Foresman curriculum.  Students are exposed to quality literature and many opportunities to expand their vocabulary and comprehension skills.  In fifth grade, students will stay with their homeroom teacher for reading unless they receive services in the resource room.  Students who need additional help will receive some services through Title 1.

Writing
Fifth graders will continue to refine their writing skills as they write letters, research reports, summaries, book reports, and journals in content area.

Spelling
Over the last few years, we have been teaching the Sitton Spelling program with much success.  Instead of memorizing a list of words each week (and forgetting them by the following week), we work on spelling skills that can be applied to our everyday writing.  There are over 500 words that fifth graders could be assessed on.  Many of these words were introduced in earlier grades.  The first 100 of those words in fact are considered Priority Words and students are expected to spelling them correctly ALL the time.  New words introduced are taught in concept lessons that teach spelling patterns and tricks to spell them.  Below are the priority words in alphabetical order:
