On Friday, March 17, students and staff of Woodburn Elementary School dedicated their new “Buddy Bench” to the memory of Julianna Yuri Snow. Julianna lived with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and was bound largely to her home, but was able to learn and build relationships with her classmates at Woodburn through an iPad and Facetime every day.
Her now first-grade classmates, along with family members and Woodburn PAWS helpers, rejoined Mrs. Kristi Damassa to make unicorn horns, share memories of Julianna, and enjoy a slice of cake under a pink banner that read, “Love is a superpower”—Julianna’s favorite phrase. We invite you to read about Julianna’s story and legacy at juliannayuri.com.
The Buddy Bench, nestled in the Woodburn playground, is a safe place for lonely students to land during recess, where others may sense their plight and invite them over to play. A video about the bench and expectations for student use can be seen here: http://viewpure.com/SRLPqdYA44Q?start=0&end=0
