Sophomore Allyssa Heilbrun and senior Alexis Royal have become the first-ever Camas High School qualifiers to represent SW Washington in Photography at SkillsUSA.

Having come out of the SW Washington regional event at 2nd and 4th place, Allyssa and Alexis advanced to the attend the state competition hosted in Yakima, Washington Thursday through Saturday of last weekend. Washington had more than 900 students and 85 advisors in attendance.

In the photography competition, the top five students from the five regions underwent challenges for two days. The students had a two-print submission section, completed a 50-question technical quiz, went through an in-person interview, identified 15 images needing corrections or bearing technical issues, and took a photo essay challenge on Pattern. Next, with images taken during the challenge, they completed a conceptual piece, and THEN they finished up by composing an advertising layout. These feats took two hours on on Thursday and 8 hours Friday.

Though final scores are still being tallied, said teacher Doug Huegli, Allyssa has been awarded the bronze and earned the opportunity to represent the state in Nashville, Tennessee in late June. Great job, Alyssa and Alexis!
