Thank you to everyone who completed our start time survey! We used the data from the parent survey, as well as the staff and student surveys at the School Board Workshop on 11/27/17. Additionally, the board reviewed the Citizen’s Advisory Committee school start time recommendation and all additional data collected this fall. The Citizen’s Advisory Committee spent the 2016-17 school year researching and exploring start time models and made an initial recommendation to our School Board in April 2017. This fall, staff have been refining models to share with our community for feedback. Throughout the process more than 4,000 data points from students, staff, and parents were collected. As a result, we will be changing our school schedules for the 2018-19 school year.
Change is always a challenge. We’re used to schedules that have been in place for a number of years. We have routines we’ve created to make those schedules work, and we appreciate that a change impacts those routines. We will be following up with you to collect information about your before- and after-school needs in December. We’ll use that information to adjust programming to align to those needs to the best of our ability. We recognize that the new schedule will have elementary students out earlier in the morning on their way to school, and we will be conducting bus stop audits and asking for information from you about any concerns you have so that we may address them.
Change also presents an opportunity. The research is clear and compelling when it comes to start times and sleep for the health and development of our adolescent students. We will be implementing a new schedule for the 2018-19 school year that better aligns with that research. A draft of that schedule is featured here. There may need to be some adjustments to the schedule when we finalize bus routing information.
If you’re interested in exploring the work that led us to this decision at a deeper level, please review Adjusting School Start Times: 2018-19. This document provides a comprehensive summary of the process.
