Course Objective

An introduction to visual reporting, photojournalism and photography with an emphasis on Adobe Photoshop. Photography assignments, lectures and digital lab work are designed to give students a working knowledge and appreciation of the challenges of photography. Visual storytelling, composition, lighting, camera technique and the ethical and copyright facing visual journalists is an integral part of the curriculum. The class begins with a crash course in photographic theory, technique and Adobe Photoshop CS. A digital SLR camera is suggested, but not required. Training will be on digital SLR cameras in order for the student to become familiar with f-stops, shutter speeds, ISO ratings, equivalent exposure, lighting ratios, focusing techniques, white balance and other technical concepts within photography. Students receive photo assignments that must be completed on deadline for in-class critic and discussion. At the end of the semester students submit a final portfolio of their work.
