Department Philosophy: The Science Department encourages each student to
take as much science as possible in high school. The thinking skills acquired
will be useful in any endeavor the student will pursue. For those considering
a science related career, the department recommends taking at least the three
basic sciences at some level: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Human Anatomy
is recommended as an advanced science elective choice.

9-12 grade (Does not fulfill lab science requirement)
An overview of the Solar System is presented, emphasizing the ways in which
we gather information as well as how we develop and modify theories. We will
cover topics such as the Earth, the sun, the moon, the planets, space exploration
(past ,present, and future missions), natural & man-made satellites,
the International Space Station, the Hubble Space Telescope, comets, asteroids,
the orgin of the Solar System, and other related topics. Students will be
expected to utilize the Internet and the school library.
ASTRONOMY - THE UNIVERSE

Prerequisite: Need current web card
9-12 grade (Does not fulfill lab science requirement)
An overview of the Universe is presented, emphasizing the ways in which
we gather information as well as how we develop and modify theories. We will
cover specific topics such as galaxies, stars, constellations, telescopes,
sky observation, star charts, red shift, expanding universe, the Big Bang
Theory, latitude & longitude, seasons, moon phases, tides, and other
related subjects. Students will be expected to utalize the Internet and the
library.
GLOBAL SCIENCE
Credit: 1.00 (Year) Lab Science
Prerequisite: None (Not designed for Science
Path majors)
This class will
study weather, geology, oceans, and astronomy, and how they affect planet
Earth.
CHEMISTRY
Credit: 1.00 (Year) Lab Science
Prerequisite: Algebra II (3-4) or instructor's
approval
Major: Athletic Trainer/Physical
Therapy; Engineering & Science; General
Science; HealthSciences; Science Teaching
The course provides a program designed for students interested in the fundamental
issues about the composition of the world about them. Chemistry as well as
Biology and Physics are all required for a proper understanding of the fundamental
laws governing the natural world. For students interested in a career in
chemistry, engineering, or medicine and related fields, Chemistry is strongly
recommended.
AP CHEMISTRY
Credit: 1.00 (Year) Lab Science
Prerequisite: Algebra II (3-4)
Major: Engineering & Science; HealthSciences;
Science Teaching
AP Chemistry is a challenging course that is the equivalent of a freshman
level college chemistry class. This course would prepare the student to take
the college AP Chemistry placement test at the end of the school year. This
is a challenging and fast paced course that requires consistently strong
discipline and responsible study skills. This is recommended for students
planning to major in chemistry, biology or engineering area.
APPLIED PHYSICS (Principles of Technology)
Credit: 1.00 (Year) Lab Science, Elective
Prerequisite: Algebra I (1-2) Fee:
$5.00
Major: Engineering & Science;
Medical Science; Science Teaching
Applied Physics (Principles of Technology), is a program covering 7 physics
principles that can be applied in the mechanical, fluid, electrical, and
thermal energy systems used throughout the work world. The course provides
hands on applied lab opportunities to better understand technical and physics
related concepts. Students will see how mathematics is applied to real physics
situations. This is a great course for students interested in technical fields.
HORTICULTURE/GREENHOUSE MANAGEMENT
Credit: 1.00 (Year) Lab Science, Elective, 5 college credits possible
from Clark
Prerequisite: None; Fee:$10.00
Major: Horticulture
This course is designed to provide an introduction to the broad area of
horticulture. Plant taxonomy, plant science, plant propagation, greenhouse
management, pest management, etc. are among the major units. Students will
have science lab projects in the greenhouse as well as opportunities for
leadership such as the CHS Spring plant sale, school grounds maintenance
projects, and career development activities in FFA. A Lab Science requirements
may be fulfilled in this class.
